Denali RoadThe National Park Service (NPS) manages 22 units in Alaska, with annual visitation ranging from over one million (Denali National Park and Preserve) to less than 100 (Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve).  The parks and preserves are commonly accessed by cruise ship, boat, rail, small plane, bus, and snowmachine.   The journey to Alaska’s National Parks is an unforgettable piece of the experience.

The Alaska Region of the NPS will use the LRTP process to ensure that the NPS Alaska transportation systems further the Park Service mission to preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.

With the NPS drop-down plan, NPS addresses the goals of the Alaska Federal Lands LRTP through responsible asset management and strategic partnering and planning.  NPS compares the costs of maintaining current essential assets and new needs with available funding, then identifies strategies to fill the funding gap.
